What causes narcolepsy?
Narcolepsy occurs because of the abnormal functions and structure of some nerve cells in the brain that are called hypocretin neurons. These nerve cells are responsible for the synthesis of certain neurotransmitter substances, called hypocretins. Individuals, who suffer from narcolepsy, have a lower number of hypocretin neurons in the brain, leading to a decrease in the production of hypocretins, thus causing disturbed REM sleep with sleepiness during daytime.
Some theories suggest that narcolepsy is an autoimmune disorder. It occurs due to the autoimmune reaction that causes destruction of some nerve cells in the brain.
It has been observed that the incidence of narcolepsy is higher in people who have a family history of sleep disorders.
This condition affects people at young age and persists for several years.
The incidence of narcolepsy is equal in males and females.
Indications of narcolepsy:
- Increased sleepiness: patients have a tendency to fall asleep during the daytime. They may fall asleep while reading a book, watching TV, attending meetings or even while driving.
- Distorted hallucinations: Almost 50% of patients suffering from narcolepsy complain of hallucinations. It is described as a dreamlike sensation that occurs during the period of transition while waking up from deep sleep.
- Difficulty in moving or walking
- Loss of muscle tone
- Lack of good sleep at night
- Uncontrollable or involuntary movements without being aware of ones actions
Diagnosis of narcolepsy:
Narcolepsy is often misdiagnosed. It may also remain undiagnosed for several years. It is usually detected when patients present with daytime sleepiness as their main complaint. If patients present with other symptoms such as tiredness, lack of concentration or weakness; narcolepsy is not considered as a probable cause of the illness because these symptoms are more common in other illnesses like anemia and depression.
Diagnostic tools for the detection of narcolepsy:
- Polysomnography
- Epworth Sleepiness Scale
- Cerebrospinal fluid hypocretin test
- Multiple Sleep Latency Test
